Children with special needs

All children are entitled to an education that is individually adapted to their needs. This right is founded on both the Knowledge Promotion and the Norwegian Education Act. Pupils who are unable to benefit satisfactorily from an ordinary education are entitled to special teaching in addition to their individually adapted education.

This could for example concern pupils with reading and writing difficulties, behavioural challenges or disabilities, or pupils who need extra challenges. Pupils without a diagnosis can also have special educational needs.

The education must be adapted to the abilities and circumstances of the pupil or apprentice concerned. The parents of children who need a specially adapted education need information on their rights, responsibilities and obligations.
